Zumerle is the New Championship Leader
Valencia (E), 19 September 2010 – The sixth round of the Trofeo Maserati GranTurismo MC, held in Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo circuit this weekend yields the leadership of the drivers’ classification to Pietro Zumerle, who reached second place in race 1 and won race 2. The Veronese driver will thus have a three-point advantage over the Goldstein/Sundberg pair in the last championship round, scheduled on 10 October in the Mugello, Italy, circuit. So in the end it was not enough for Sundberg to tally up his fourth victory of the season in race 1 —right in front of Zumerle and Sergio Rota— to defend the classification position the pair had held since the round at Zolder. Sundberg’s team-mate, Steven Goldstein, had to be content with a fifth place (and sixth overall) in the second race. He was unable to take advantage of Ardagna Perez’s and Sergio Rota’s exit; the Venezuelan driver was out after a collision with the Italian and the latter was slowed down by a problem with a tire and then penalized with a drive-through. Paolo Necchi came in second in race 2; he consolidates his third place in the standings thanks to this result. Stefano Gai was third under the checkered flag. Gai, who was racing with a GT4, is now celebrating another double victory in the category (two successes, just like at the first round in Monza). Francesco Maggi rounds up the podium trio for the Trofeos, thus straightening up a weekend that had started out a bit askew.
With two second places in Valencia, Jonathan Sicart gets to keep his GT4 first place with only 3 points over Stefano Gai. Pietro Zumerle (Trofeo): “I’m very happy about my performance because this victory got me to the top of the standings. I once again had to struggle with Necchi for the final success, but dueling with him is always a pleasure because he is a fair adversary. We’ll be headed toward Mugello next and I am just thinking about taking home this win”. Stefano Gai (GT4): “I’m thrilled about these two victories, but what counts most to me is the overall third place in race 2, won with a GT4, which is surely different from and less powerful than a Trofeo. For a long while I remained stuck behind a driver, otherwise I would have tried to go get the leaders of the race”. Race 1 - Trofeo Race 1 – GT4 1. Peter Sundberg 41:21.097 1.
