Chinese GP - A lot of work in a little time

Heavy rain hit Shanghai on Thursday night and there was some patchy drizzle in the morning which meant the track was damp for the start of proceedings in FP1 this morning. That’s not ideal when you have new parts to assess, with the Scuderia’s designers having introduced some aero updates for the third race of the season, but at least the situation was the same for all twelve teams, most of whom have been able to introduce a few updates since the Malaysian Grand Prix three weeks ago. The poor morning conditions meant that everyone was keen to do as many laps as possible in the afternoon and the Scuderia Ferrari duo racked up a total of 63 laps: 32 for Fernando Alonso who ended the day tenth on the time sheet and one less for Felipe Massa who was seventeenth fastest. The two men split the workload to generate as much data as possible. They ran both types of tyre, although the Brazilian’s run on the softer tyre was spoilt by the fact he had to pit after Timo Glock put his Marussia in the gravel at the first corner.
Quickest was Michael Schumacher, today in a Mercedes, but in 2006, the winner of this race at the wheel of a Ferrari. He was the only man to break the 1m 36 second barrier this afternoon. Next up was Lewis Hamilton for McLaren, the Englishman knowing he will already have a five place grid penalty, as it was found he has a faulty gearbox which needed to be changed. In third and fourth spots were the two Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, followed by Nico Rosberg in the Mercedes and Jenson Button sixth fastest for McLaren. The rest of the weekend is supposed to bring an improvement in the weather with no more rain expected and sunshine on the menu. Hopefully this will give the Ferrari men a full hour to fine tune the set-up of the F2012 in the third and final free practice session, prior to the afternoon’s all-important qualifying session: at the moment, with the car’s current performance level, the first objective will be to get both Fernando and Felipe safely through to the third and final part of the proceedings, so they can battle it out for a place in the top ten.
