European GP - Underway again in Valencia

The first free practice session for the European Grand Prix, the eighth round of the Formula 1 world championship, took place today, in preparation for the Sunday’s race on the Valencian street circuit. Topping the time sheet in his Williams was Pastor Maldonaldo in a time of 1.40.984. Next up were the two Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel (1.40.973) and Mark Webber (1.40.984.) Fastest of the two Ferrari’s was Fernando Alonso, fifth in 1.41.065, while in the other F2012, Felipe Massa was fourteenth, completing 20 laps, the quickest in 1,42,109. This first session was given over mainly to a busy aero testing programme, with the two cars running in different trim, while both drivers used just one set of the Medium tyres. Felipe tried different exhaust configurations and, like his team-mate, also did some practice starts at the end. Evaluating the updates on both F2012s continues in the second session, which starts at 2pm.
