European GP – Up hill struggle in qualifying for the two F2012

Valencia, 23 June

Determination was not enough for the two Scuderia Ferrari drivers in this afternoon’s qualifying session. Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa will start from eleventh (1.38.707) and thirteenth (1.38.780) on the grid at the Valencia street circuit. As they did not make the cut into Q3, the Ferrari drivers now have more strategy options for the race, as they can both count on two new sets of the Soft tyres. The two men ran the same tyre strategy this afternoon: one set of Medium in Q1 and one Medium and one Soft in Q2. Quickest in a time of 1.38.086 was again Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull, followed by Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren (1.38.410) and Pastor Maldonaldo completing the top three in the Williams with a lap time of 1.38.475. The forecast is for more hot and sunny weather for tomorrow’s 57 lap race, when as usual the key will be the strategy based on tyre wear.
