Korean GP - Good today, better tomorrow?

Less than three tenths separates Fernando Alonso from Mark Webber’s pole setting lap in this afternoon’s qualifying session, with the Spaniard looking forward to starting the Korean Grand Prix from the outside of the second row in fourth spot. As for Felipe Massa, the Scuderia’s saviour last Sunday in Japan, he lines up right behind his team-mate in sixth spot. That’s a lot better than sixth and tenth on the grid which was the scenario in Suzuka, which is not too difficult to explain: the F2012 seems better suited to the different track characteristics here on the outskirts of Mokpo and the engineers have also fine tuned the package to give the drivers a more competitive car overall. Ferrari fans should not get swept along on a wave of optimism because there are still 55 laps of this demanding track to go before the points are handed out. Even if the field seems much more bunched up in terms of lap times, it’s fair to say that Red Bull, victorious in Japan, still looks like the strongest team and again they have monopolised the front row, although this weekend, it’s their Australian driver Mark Webber who just outpaced his German team-mate Sebastian Vettel.
Fernando shares his row with the McLaren of third placed Lewis Hamilton, while Felipe has Kimi Raikkonen in the Lotus alongside him. Effectively, ahead of him, the Brazilian has all five top contenders for this year’s world title, so there is everything to play for and the start will be a nail-biting moment. The Alonso-Massa-F2012 triumvirate is usually very good off the line once the start lights go out and it is to be hoped that is the case tomorrow, as both our drivers start from the dirty side of the track and at this circuit, that can be penalising. Tyre management in the race, where of course as per the rules, all the top ten drivers will start on the Supersoft tyre, as that’s what they used at the end of Q3, will be the key and here the Prancing Horse might have the edge if it can come in to change its “shoes” later than those ahead of it at the first stop. As all 24 cars leave the grid, Fernando will have Vettel in his sights, literally ahead of him on the grid and as the Spaniard said, his top priority tomorrow is to finish ahead of the man who trails him by just four points in the classification.
