Victory at Monza, podium at Silverstone

There was good news from this Sunday’s races for the 458 GT, which was competing in the first rounds of both the World Endurance Championship at Silverstone and the Blancpain Endurance Series at Monza.
At the end of six hours of action in the first race of the FIA World Championship at the English circuit, the AF Corse team had its cars in second and fifth places of the GTE Pro category – in the hands of Kobayashi-Vilander and Bruni-Fisichella respectively. The Japanese-Finnish duo had an excellent race as they made their competitive debut together: Kamui and Toni were on the same wavelength straightaway and they were in the hunt for the entire race, despite the influence of the “balance of performance” which was set by the organisers based on the performance of the various cars. By contrast there was little luck all weekend for the defending champions from Rome, Fisichella and Bruni, who ended up with a worse result than expected. Victory went to Aston Martin with England’s Turner, Germany’s Mücke and Brazil’s Senna at the wheel.
A Ferrari also made it onto the podium, albeit on the lowest step, in the GTE Am category, which was also won by Aston Martin with the all-Danish line-up of Nygaard, Poulsen and Simonsen. The 458 GT2 run by the 8Star Motorsport team, in the hands of Potolicchio, Aguas and Peter, secured a fine third place which could have been even better if they hadn’t been hit by a Corvette when they were running second on the penultimate lap. Two other Ferraris were classified: fifth place for Krohn-Jonsson-Mediani (Krohn Racing) and seventh for Gerber-Cioci-Griffin (AF Corse), who were forced to spend half an hour in the pits after a collision with a prototype.
In three weeks the WEC’s racers will return to action at another prestigious track, Spa-Francorchamps.
The first race of this year’s Blancpain series also took place today at Monza, where victory went to the 458 GT3 of the Kessel Racing team, driven by Miguel Ramos, Davide Rigon and Daniel Zampieri, who finished ahead of two McLaren MP4-12Cs. The Maranello car also ended up on top in the other classes: in the Pro-Am category, the AF Corse model in the hands of Niek Hommerson and Louis Machiels took the win, with Andrea Bertolini putting in a final stint that took them to fifth place overall. In the Trofeo Gentleman glory went to the 458 of the SOFREV team, driven by the all-French line-up of Beaubelique-Goueslard-Blanchimain. As many as 60 GT3s took part in this first round of the series, with 171 drivers in the fray: the next date is scheduled for Silverstone on June 1-2.
