A weekend of mixed emotions for the 458 GT

There were two sides to Ferrari’s weekend of GT racing. The happy one was on show in Portimao in Portugal, at the second round of the International GT Open season. One outright victory and a class win were the best results from the two races run at the Portuguese track, both coming in Race 2. The outright win came thanks to Matt Griffin and Duncan Cameron, who completely dominated the race in the AF Corse 458. Griffin took the lead right from the start, overtaking pole man Pastorelli and from then on the car entered by the team from Piacenza was never headed. It crossed the line ahead of the Pastorelli-Ramos Corvette, which won Race 1 on Saturday.
In third spot, another Ferrari, in the hands of Andrea Montermini who came second along with Luca Filippi in Race 2, ahead of the Campanico-Vieira Audi. In the GTS category, the win in Race 2 went to the SMP Racing Russian Bears 458 GT3, crewed by Roman Mavlanov (Russia) and Pol Rosell (Spain,) who finished ahead of the similar AF Corse car driven by Beretta-Lyons. In this category, the top spot in Race 1 went to the aforementioned Audi, ahead of the 458 of Basov-Pier Guidi (Esta Motorsport,) while the AT Racing 458, in the hands of the Belarus father and son Talkanitsa duo finished third in the senior category.
After the rounds at Le Castellet and Portimao, Ferrari leads both the Constructors’ classifications: in Super GT it has a 24 point lead over Chevrolet (64 to 40) and in GTS, 28 over Mercedes (52 to 24.) Of the drivers, Andrea Montermini, deprived today of his team-mate Luca Filippi, who was working as a TV commentator at the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix, took the lead on his own, with 76 points ahead of Filippi (58) and the Talkanitsas (47.)
It was a terrible Saturday for the Matteo Malucelli – Olivier Beretta 458 GT2, in action at Laguna Seca for the third round of the American Le Mans Series. After the young Italian driver had taken a great pole position, the duo were bombarded with penalties, some for exceeding the pit lane speed limit and others when the Race Director decided they were to blame for collisions with other cars. The Maranello machine thus finished eighth in class, even though it had demonstrated great potential, as could be seen from Beretta’s second fastest race lap. The second 458 GT2 entered by West Boardwalk Ferrari and driven by Bill Sweedler and Townsend Bell, took fourth in class.
